Myths and Facts about M.Tech at IITs

M.Tech stands for Masters of Technology. But in country like ours (which lies much low specially in higher education), M.Tech is not considered as a HOT opportunity just as MBA. There are lots of myths about M.Techs. Specially if you are having a job. There is so much stigma around us against M.Tech. I will like to share some general myths about M.Tech at IITs and provide suitable facts:

Myth : M.Techs at IITs are as Good as B.Techs !!

Fact : M.Techs at IITs are as good as B.Techs because:

1. They are taught by the same professors who teaches B.Tech students. In fact some of the senior faculties teach only M.Tech guys.

2. When IITs were formed, there main focus was to produce good engineers as they were  very much needed by newly freed India for its technological advancement. But after so many years, after producing so many world class engineers making India  self abundant, IITs are going to the next step. During last 10-15 years IITs have shift there focus from producing mere engineers to masters in their field.

3.  In fact even some of the courses done by btechs and mtechs are same and for some of the courses you will attend with the btech guys.  So if the quality is good for them, its good for mtechs too.

Myth : After M.Tech, only option left is Teaching.

Fact : People have this perception that after doing an mtech, the only thing you can do is teaching. Teaching is last option left after doing M.Tech. (if you have done really bad and have spend 2 years in just passing time). Mtech people do  get placed in Amazon, Adobe, Morgan Stanley, Oracle, Citrix, Cisco, Mircrosoft etc. Some of these companies hire more mtechs than btechs. Placement in IITs depend very much on your caliber than on anything else.  But if you want a relaxed, stable, tension free (also boring, monotonous and easy) life, teaching is always an option. :)

But there is a catch. There is no separate placement for mtechs and btechs. This means an mtech has to compete with btech for placements. But if you have done your mtech seriously you can still compete with them. A lot of mtech guys do get better placements than btechs !

 

Myth : M.Tech is all relax and fun two years.

Fact : Most people think mtechs dont have to study much and they can relax for 2 years. This is not entirely true though it could be partially true. Here’s how: Courses in IITs can be divided into roughly two categories:

1) Courses that are really very good but at the same time extremely tough. It is very difficult to get a good grade in such courses but you learn a lot. It is in these type of courses that you get the real advantage of being at IIT.

2) Courses that are very easy but mostly useless. You can easily get a good grade in these courses without much effort but they will hardly do any value addition.

So if you mostly take easy courses in your mtech career, you can end up with a good CGPA without working hard at all. But then your mtech would be a waste and you will struggle to get a good placement. On the other hand, you can take the tough but good courses, you will learn a lot, but believe me, it becomes very hectic. These courses will make you work so hard that GATE studies will look like a piece of cake. But at the end, it will be worth it. Same logic applies to your choice of project. As such how tough or how easy your mtech is will depend on how much hard work you are willing to do. Unfortunately, most people take the useless easy courses, dont work hard at all during mtech and then say doing mtech in IITs was a bad idea.

 

Overall M.Tech from IITs is a good option. Competetion is less here as compared to MBA. Also Mtech from IITs is cheap. It will cost about 35K per semester for mtech in IITs. This includes your tution fees, hostel fees, mess dues, etc. But this is very less as compared to IIMs.In this amount you get to live in a quality IIT environment, and get to use all the facilities like labs, sports facilities, internet etc. Plus you get a stipend of Rs. 8000 per month (i think this could increase this year). So that almost covers your fees. Compare this with doing MS in a US university or an MBA.

    Thanks for the info. Can U give clear analysis about the courses offered for CS students in M.Tech, which are useless and which are tougher?

    It depends upon institute to institute. But i would advise you to always take basic CS subjects like algorithms as these kinda subjects are required by company during placement.

    M.S. in IIT M woudl be difficult but you may get in other good colleges like DCE etc. I advise you to apply everywhere so you won’t have to repent later on.

    IITs are lil difficult but you can apply to lower IITs and new IITs. You must apply to centralized counselling for NITs. You will get admission into top 4 NITs for sure.

    Hmm with this GATE score IIT seems to be difficult for you dear. But you can get into good NITs. If you are highly determined to pursue higher studies in IIT only then you may drop this year. IITs are worth a try. But remember competition will increase year after year and also you will need higher level of concentration and commitment. Hear advice from everyone but take decision from your own. It must be your call not everybody call !

    You can only get into some state Univ. which dont have good placements. If you want to pursue your career in teaching you can go for it. But if you want to pursue your career in IT and core field.. prepare for GATE 2013 and secure a good rank. All the Best !

    You may not get top IITs but you may have a slight chance of getting lower IITs and new IITs. You will get top NITs for sure. So if you wanna take chance.. apply to lower IITs. Rest apply for centralized counselling of NITs for sure!

    2nd thing you said Courses can be divided as two categories interesting but difficult to score and those easy but do not hold much value.Now could you detail out classify which courses falls under which category?
    All i can say is this article is as vague as it can be. So much of writing and all one gets to know is MTech is good and there are options,where as a true informative article should provide facts and figure.The bottom line is why should I believe you.Give us some facts,numbers data.Then you can demystify the facts and myth part. 
    Its really hard to find a good article on MTech courses in India .

    Apart from teching there are various career options, like becoming a research scholar, or a scientist, and work as engineers too. These are just a few commons, but as per the departments the jobs are numerous. ECE has gt numerous options in India at present. Graduates in Electronics Engineering have opportunities in Government and private companies for installation, operation and maintenance of electronics equipments and systems. Defence, space and other large research organisations employ electronics engineers in design and development of complex devices and systems for signal processing and telecommunication. Industries involved in design and fabrication of devices, integrated circuits, embedded systems, electronic equipments etc have also provide large scale placements for engineers with this specilisation. Installation and maintenance of electronic equipments used for health care in hospitals, equipments & systems for instrumentation and control in process industries automation systems of assembly line in production industries, etc are also handled by electronics engineers.
