Testing your skills in English has become mandatory for studying abroad. For this one has to clear TOEFL or IELTS before applying for any course abroad. This has led to a great demand for preparing for such tests with the help of training institutes, writes Gurpreet H Upadhyay

If you are a student and planning to attend college or graduate school in the United States, you need to appear for English test as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

More than 5,200 colleges and universities worldwide require IELTS or TOEFL results as part of your application. It is designed to evaluate your mastery of the English language and your ability to be successful in an English-speaking academic environment. The TOEFL is also used by undergraduate institutions and by several Government agencies and other organisations for professional certification.

Kanchan Sharma, Centre Head of World Wide Education detailed about the increasing craze of TOEFL and IELTS in Bhopal.

Sharma said that the craze of TOEFL and IELTS is increasing among the youth in the State capital. Now, the people in Bhopal are more aware about such tests. The students appearing for these exams in the city majorly belong to Chhindwara, Satna, Rewa, Sagar and Jabalpur.

TOEFL and IELTS are mandatory English language exams for students appearing for education in foreign countries. In Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal and Indore are the exam centres for TOEFL and IELTS.

Every year almost 1.5 lakh students from the country appear for TOEFL and IELTS. Almost 600 students from Bhopal and over 2,000 students from Indore cover the strength of 6,000 students from Madhya Pradesh.

The headquarters of TOEFL is in the US and it costs US$165 whereas the headquarters of IELTS is in Australia which costs Rs 7, 200 to a student.

The registration of TOEFL and IELTS is not so difficult. It is different for both the tests. The students need to create an account for TOEFL, then they have to take date and fix the appointment and make the payment by credit card whereas the students of IELTS need to download the form, complete it and submit it at the centre.

Passport is a mandatory document as an identity proof for the students applying for the exam.

Sharma further informed that the preparation of both the tests takes only two months. However, it also depends on the candidates. Some candidates complete the course before time. She said that the English proficiency tests consist of four parts: Reading, writing, hearing and speaking.

TOEFL is computer-based and IELTS is paper-based. The centre head informed that she has two different faculties for the courses. One faculty is for reading and hearing whereas another one is for writing and speaking section.

The students who wish to go the US and Canada for studies need to clear TOEFL whereas the students wishing to move to Australia and the United Kingdom need to clear IELTS.

Sharma informed that the major difference in both the tests is of their structure. Each section of TOEFL consists of 30 marks whereas IELTS carries 9 bands in each section.

While talking about the eligibility, Sharma said that there is no such eligibility criteria for age and qualification for both the exams. The validity of TOEFL and IELTS is two years, which means the students appeared for exams need to apply within two years otherwise the score gets lapsed.

The repetition of exams is only once in a month and five times a year.

TOEFL is conducted every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year whereas IELTS is conducted every Sunday. Also, the results of both the exams do not take much time. It takes maximum 15-20 days only.

Kanchan Sharma also shared the results of students who recently appeared in the exams.

Rahul Tripathi who scored 104 marks out of 120, appeared for TOEFL in October this year. Rahul has passed out Class XI from Delhi Public School and now he is studying in Class XIIth from Bonnie Foi School.

Rahul is preparing for bachelors programme from the US.

Another student is Vivek Vishvakarma who scored 91 out of 120 marks in TOEFL. Vivek is an IT student and basically hails from Jabalpur. Vivek is a mechanical engineering student of IIT Roper and he is planning for Masters of PhD from the US. Vivek said, “TOEFL is a general exam and I did not prepare much about the exams. I have not read so much for the exams. It is easy to appear for TOEFL.”

While talking about the students who cannot clear the exams in first attempt Kanchan Sharma said “Many students are there who find it tough to clear in first attempt. Some students find the paper lengthy as it takes 4 hours in TOEFL and 2.5 hours in IELTS. We, as a trainer put some extra efforts for such students. We try to find the weakness of the student and focus majorly on that section. If a student is weak at reading, we take classes for improving his vocabulary. For hearing section, we suggest to them to watch English movies and songs and read newspapers. If a student is weak at writing, we give him topics on writing an essay. For speaking section, we conduct face to face speaking classes.”

Another Training Manager Bhor Dubey from Vedic Inc said that IELTS is an English language exam. TOEFL is more in demand in the US whereas IELTS is more in demand in other countries.

IELTS is more popular than TOEFL. The US has a higher standard of education and that is the reason of IELTS being more popular. Dubey further informed that almost 5, 000 students from the State appear for IELTS every year. The major difference she shared is that TOEFL is all about language knowledge like grammar whereas IELTS is about how you communicate in English.

Dubey also shared few names of the students who prepared for IELTS from her institute: Aafrin Kidwai who scored 8 bands in IELTS is pursuing her masters from New Zealand. She basically hails from Bhopal and completed her graduation from BSS College.

Another student is harsh Goyal who also hails from Bhopal also scored 8 bands in IELTS and is at present pursuing Masters in Finance from France. Both Aafrin and Harsh prepared for the exam six months back under the guidance of Bhor Dubey from Vedic Inc.
